Wooden Storage Crate

One day my wife says she has had it.  She's tired of not having enough storage.


I can relate.  I know the frustration of having odds and ends with no place to put them.  When I finally break down and just put something somewhere, I tell myself surely I'll remember that I put that odd ball thing there.

Yeah right!

Two weeks later I'm asking my wife if she knows where that great place was that I stuck that thing.

Nope.

That is the only response I get.  Sometimes I feel lucky to only get that.

We were at the store the other day and she saw some wooden crates on sale.  "Ooh!" she says.  "I want these."

"We're not buying those." I insist.

"Why not?"  comes the response.

"Because I can make as many of those as you want.  They're just pieces of wood glued and tacked together."

"Fine."  she says,  "I'll take 20!"

DIY:  Wooden Storage Crate

TIPS: The following measurements may be substituted.
1.5" = 1x2's
2.5" = 1x3's
3.5" = 1x4's
5.5" = 1x6's

All boards used are 3/4" thick unless otherwise noted.

Use caution working with solid lumber wider than 1x6's.  Especially soft woods such as pine.  I find they show a greater propensity to warp, twist and cup.  Gluing boards side by side, otherwise known as a glue up, will offer greater stability across the project.

 

Cut List

8 - One Quarter Inch Pieces @ 11.75" x 1.5"
8 - One Quarter Inch Pieces @ 17.25" x 1.5"
10 - One Quarter Inch Bottom Pieces @ 11.75" x 1.5"
4 - 2x2's @ 6.5"

2 - Side Rails @ 14.75" x .5" x .5" (optional)
2 - Rail Stops @ 1" x .75" x .5" (optional)

Additional Materials

Wood Glue
3/4" Brad Nails

Final Thoughts

At just $2 a pop these DIY Wooden Crates are not only easy to put together but affordable as well.

The side rails can be left off and crates easily staked on top of each other any place you have room.  Label the outside with blue tape and know exactly what each one contains at a glance.
