Some of our regular readers and followers of our YouTube channel remember how Hurricane Matthew affected us here in Florida.

We had an oak tree that was growing on an incline in the backyard.  As you probably know when trees grow on the side of hills they tend to be unstable.

Needless to say this one wasn't stable enough to withstand a category 3 hurricane.

Fortunately our home didn't sustain any major damage, and everyone was safe and sound. The fence did take a beating and was partially crushed under the tree.

We took out that portion of the fence and plan on rebuilding it when I get a chance...and the money.

Some of the boards are in good condition and can be reused.  Others need to just be replaced

Instead of pitching the boards that can't be reused, I thought why not repurpose them.  How about some nice simple and easy pieces of furniture.

Sounds good to me, plus, if I run out of boards, there's a lot of fencing material on the side of the road right now after hurricane Matthew.

Jeff Baker had a similar thought when he had some extra fence pickets laying around.

Jeff used a cross cut sled in his build. If you don't have one, you can check out my circular saw cross cut jig here:

He took some extra time to shore up his build with some additional supports. That should help in the long run to keep it nice and sturdy.

DIY Coffee Table

We had a neighbor once that had a small toddler and an all glass coffee table.  I'm sure they got the coffee table before they got the baby.

They were always having to monitor baby and table.  Then, one day, we saw they'd taken it out completely and it was in their storage unit.

I didn't even have to ask.

We've got four children.  That glass table wouldn't have lasted a day without an incident.

Someone would've been injured, the table would have become a gym set, or the glass would've broken.

Then it'd be no big surprise if I told you that we don't even have a coffee table right now.

When I spotted this neat build from "BearWoodWork" YouTube channel.  I began to rethink my stance on coffee tables.

Sort of.

This one is made with pallets so it'd be almost free.  If the children messed it up, who cares.  Although there's still the possibility for the odd gymnastics incident though.  Hehe!

Final Thoughts

This build goes quick since it has no complicated joinery. Just make sure you have enough nails or you're back to the home improvement store mid-way through the project.

I also see this as being a good choice in a kid's play room . It'd encourage imaginative play and double as a puzzle surface.

DIY Garden Hose Storage

This is the eleventh post of our series of projects to make us thankful for DIY.  Be sure to check back everyday during the month of November for new simple and easy DIY projects. It's our way of saying Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Simply Easy DIY!

We have a 100 foot garden hose on one side of the house.  It's lasted two years and is still going strong although a little kinked.

We always pull it out, around and across the yard, but never put it back.


One time I was walking around the yard to take some table scraps to the chickens and because the grass was a little high, I didn't see it laying there.

Yup, I tripped over it and said a cuss word or two as I picked myself off the ground.

Fortunately, the table scraps landed on me....cause you know how chickens hate their food laying on the ground (cough, cough).

All was well except my ego!

DIY Rustic Magazine Holder

In our home, magazines seem to have babies.

We have several subscriptions that the children love and even I have a few woodworking subscriptions to keep track of.

Plus, we've always got friends who want to give us hand me downs. We do have a large collection accumulated.

Our system has been to use these plain grey cardboard holders.

To be honest, they were castaways from a prior workplace and are a little worse for wear. My old workplace was getting rid of them in order to re-organize the storeroom.

No, I didn't dumpster dive (not that I'm against that).

I like to think of it as going "warehouse diving" in a big dusty pile. Hehe!  Not wanting to let something go to waste, I brought several home.

Now, you see the picture.  Boring, right?  Yeah that's what I thought as well.  So at some point I thought about wrapping them in something to add a fresh look.

THEN...along came Shane Conlan from DIY for Knuckleheads.  Yeah, we've talked about him before here at Simply Easy DIY.

He gives us a great idea for magazine holders.

What's not better on wheels?  Nothing I says, nothing at all.

DIY Make A Bench From 2x4's

Project 9

This is the ninth post of our series of projects to make us thankful for DIY.  Be sure to check back everyday during the month of November for new simple and easy DIY projects. It's our way of saying Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Simply Easy DIY!

We hate tracking mud and dirt throughout our house. It'd be so helpful if we had one of these in our entryway because it'd encourage kids and adults to stop and take off their shoes. 

Up north they take their shoes off so they don't track in mud, snow, and the like from their boots. In our climate we don't wear boots, but that still doesn't mean we don't have a need.


Story time...

Once my wife was wearing a new pair of sneakers. ("Trainers" for our European friends). This pair had pretty deep tread because they were brand new.

She had to walk outside for a short trip and cut through some grass between the neighboring houses.

Little did she know that she had walked through where someone had just walked their dog and left  dog poo.


She came in the house still with her shoes on and managed to walk through the entire house saying, "What is that smell.  I smell something, what is that?"

Wives have a great habit of being able to detect any smell, much to the annoyance of husbands.  Have you ever lived with someone who constantly says, "Do you smell that?"

SIGH........................................

At some point I had had enough and said, "I only smell it when you walk by, did you step in something?"

A horrified look appeared on her face as she realized she had tracked it all over the carpet in every room.

So it was off to the store to get a carpet steam cleaner.


It would have been so much better to have this bench in the entryway where you can leave your shoes off and not have mishaps like that.

Final Thoughts

Leftover 2x4 scraps from a prior build made this project very affordable. If you go the joinery route that Chris takes you'll get some practice in with those mortise and tenon joints but the end result is worth it.

If you are not comfortable with that style of joinery you could always use pocket holes to complete the project, they would work just as well.

Chris mentions in the video what the inspiration piece was for this bench. If you go check it out, you'll see that the original retails for around $500.00.

Using only scrap materials he already had in his shop, I'd say he did good.

DIY - Outdoor Wood Fired Oven Base

Pizzas made at home are better for you and delicious too. Why not have some fun cooking your own home made pizzas outdoors in a wood fired oven?

They're really fun and make the most amazing crusts.

You can go to a dealer and get an oven but you will have to consider what base it will be placed on.

Some retailers actually sell bases, but if you're industrious enough you can try your hand at making your own.

That's what our friend FreshP did.

DIY Outdoor Oven Base

She learned how to weld and successfully made her own stand. Then, she finished it off with a bit of sanding and a black coat of paint.

After you have a base and an oven to go on the base all you have to do is follow the manufacturer's instruction for placement of the oven on top of the stand.

And, in case you're interested, you can see this great oven in use right here... making  amazing and delectable pizzas in about a minute!



I wonder if a DIY wooden pizza tray is in her future?

Even if you have never tried welding, you may know someone who does know how. They might even have a shop . If you want to learn, just ask them!

Who knows, you may find that you enjoy it.

Final Thoughts

I'll be honest, after watching this, I was drooling for a pizza. That amazing wood fired crust is unmistakable. Makes me want to try the recipe she showcases featuring tomatoes, onions, mozzarella and basil.

When it comes to cooking at home, you can control what goes into your food and then you know for sure which ingredients you're consuming.

With these pizzas cooking in a minute or so, you can throw a party and everyone can make their own custom pizza. (No anchovies for me please!).
